In 2009 Shopify was a small Canadian platform that few people in Pakistan had heard of. It was also the year Shopify opened its App Store and its API to outside developers, and the year we took on our first Shopify client, the US umbrella wholesaler Umbrella Bazaar.
What changed
Themes became systems
Early themes were a set of Liquid templates edited by hand. Sections arrived later and gave merchants control of the home page. Online Store 2.0, announced in 2021, extended sections to every page and introduced JSON templates and app blocks. A merchant can now build pages that once needed a developer.
The checkout opened, carefully
For years the checkout was locked unless you were on Shopify Plus, which launched in 2014, and edited checkout.liquid. Shopify has since replaced that file with checkout extensibility: UI extensions and Shopify Functions that survive upgrades. It is a better model, and it meant rebuilding a good deal of older custom work.
Apps grew up
The App Store went from a few dozen listings to thousands. Scripts injected into themes gave way to theme app extensions that uninstall cleanly. The API moved to versioned releases with GraphQL at the centre.
Pakistan arrived
The largest change for us has been local. Online retail in Pakistan grew from a curiosity into an ordinary way to shop, and Karachi now has a real community of Shopify merchants and developers.
What never changed
Simple stores sell
Customers want to find the product, trust the seller and pay without trouble. That was true in 2009 and remains true now.
Speed is a feature
Connections are faster than they were. Pages are heavier. The stores that win are still the ones that feel instant on a phone.
The merchant must own the store
Accounts, code and data belong to the business. Every rescue project we take on begins with untangling ownership that was set up wrongly at the start.
Honest advice outlasts clever selling
Telling a client they do not need the expensive option has cost us projects, and it is the reason clients return years later.
What comes next
The platform will keep changing. If you want a team that has adapted to every version so far, we would like to hear from you.
